In-School Programming
Workshops | Residencies | How To Book | Subsidies and FAQ's
Milwaukee Shakespeare offers in-school workshops and residencies (multiple-day workshops) year-round. The common element among workshops is student interaction and participation.
Workshops
- Let us custom-craft a workshop to support your curriculum and cover educational standards/targets.
- Choose from standard workshop offerings to enrich your experience of one of our current productions. Standard workshops include but are not limited to:
- Stage a Scene: teaching artist directs a scene or scenes from a play with students as actors and audience
- Acting Shakespeare: teaching artist conducts a basic acting lesson using Shakespeare's text
- Codebreaking Shakespeare: students learn how to find and use language devices in Shakespeare's scripts
- Basic Stage Combat: students learn basic combat moves and how a fight scene tells its own story
- Visit from William Shakespeare: an actor playing Shakespeare joins the class for a student-driven interview
- Bring a resident artist to your school for longer-term units or projects.

Residencies
Milwaukee Shakespeare is pleased to offer the services of teaching artists for multiple-day workshops, or residencies. Schools will receive instruction from an artist-in-residence available for multiple classes and longer-term projects, from coaching an in-school production of Shakespeare to exploring every angle of sculpting a production. Inquire with the Education Department about availability and fees.
Up to four 2-week residencies will be made available to MPS or Choice schools free of charge this season.

Subsidy Information and FAQ's
Class Size
An ideal class size is 7-25 students depending upon workshop content. A maximum class size of 30 is recommended for most standard workshops. A maximum class size of 20 is recommended for extremely physical workshops (i.e. stage combat). Consult with the Education Department about student numbers as it may affect how content is presented.
Workshop Location
Highly physical workshops are best conducted in an open space such as a gym, school theatre space, cafetorium, or backyard. All workshops will likely have students up on their feet in some way.
Subsidies for MPS and Choice Schools
In-school workshops for MPS and Choice schools are free of charge this season, thanks to the support of our education sponsors. To take advantage of subsidized programming, please indicate when you book your workshop if your school is MPS, Choice or otherwise in need of program subsidy.
